The Exeter Public Library is located on the Exeter River in the center of downtown. The 14,000 square foot building was built in 1987, replacing the old public library on Front Street.

Today's library boasts some 55,000 volumes, including an ample children's collection and many special collections. You'll also find large-print books, audio books, periodicals, newspapers, compact discs, video programs and popular paperbacks. An extensive reference collection and a well-respected collection of genealogical sources are also offered.

The Library provides recreational and informational materials to all library users on-site. Library card holders may borrow from the library. Library cards are free to Exeter residents and are $70 yearly for non-residents.

The Exeter Historical Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the research and preservation of Exeter’s past. Founded in 1928, the society offers a public museum, library and educational programs. The Exeter Historical Society building is itself notable, being constructed with yellow brick in 1893 and originally serving as the town's public library.  New members and volunteers encouraged to contact the curator for more  information.
