A site emergency involves a serious incident, such as a fire in a safety system, but is not as serious as a general emergency.
What happens if a general emergency occurs at the Seabrook nuclear power plant?| Sirens within the 10-mile zone will sound alerting people to tune to local media outlets for official information. Some public protection measures are likely. In a general emergency, the most severe situation, sheltering and evacuation decisions would be made by local emergency management agencies advised by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and officials with Florida Power and Light (the power plant's owners.)
I heard warning sirens. What should I do?Sirens for the nuclear power plant are located throughout the Seacoast. They are tested twice yearly. If an emergency is in progress instead of a test, local Emergency Alert System broadcast stations will carry news of the emergency. If it is only a test, no emergency information will be broadcast. (See more about emergency sirens below.) The local EAS broadcaster is WOKQ-FM 97.5.
Potassum Iodide pills for protection against radiation. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has enabled each individual who lives or works in an Emergency Planning Zone surrounding either the Seabrook Station or Vermont Yankee nuclear power plants to receive one tablet of potassium iodide from the State of New Hampshire. In event of a radiation emergency, you would take the pill to protect yourself. If you'd like a potassium iodide pill, you must submit an application form, available at the Exeter town office, 10 Front Street. You may also download an online copy of the application form from the New Hampshire health and human services office by clicking here.
