Town Permits  Town Permits Minimize

Most permits require the approval of the Board of Selectmen and the Town Manager. Others are issued by the reviewing department. For example:
  • Permits to burn are reviewed and issued by the fire department.
  • Building permits are issued by the Planning and Building Department. Apply in person, at the town office building, 10 Front Street, during weekday business hours.
Permits are required for:
  • Banners across Water Street
  • Auctioneering
  • Hawkers and peddlers
  • Use of town facilities
  • Use of town rights-of-way (most often for road races, walkathons, and blocking off of spaces for charity events.)
Any request for a road closure needs approval of the Police Chief and a permit from the Board of Selectmen.

There are fees and insurance requirements for most permits.  Most permits require approval of the Selectmen at a public meeting. The town asks that requests for permits be made at least 30 days days prior to an events..
